Adirondack Ecology

Photo Gallery

Keene Central School is continuously enhancing the elementary science curriculum (K-6) specifically around environmental science and ecology of the Adirondacks.

Beginning in kindergarten, students are given a sense of place by being presented with opportunities to discover and make connections between science, the natural world and life in the Adirondacks.

The science course elective, Adirondack Ecology (11th and 12th grade), is devoted to the study of the ecology of the Adirondacks and the relationships of people to this particular mountain environment. The content includes a study of regional geology, forest ecosystems, wetlands, birdlife, wildlife, and aquatic systems. Human influences on the landscape from historic logging to current day issues of climate change and acid rain are also covered.

This is a non-regents course that meets for a double period every other day. The course is a combination of in-class lecture/discussion and outdoor hands-on activities that explore the forests and streams adjacent to Keene Central School. The class takes several longer field trips in the Fall to unique ecosystems such as the Alpine and Peatlands , along with a Spring trip to The Wild Center in Tupper Lake, NY. Prerequisite: Earth Science and Living Environment
