Forensics
Forensics is an elective English course comprised mostly of students in Grades 9/10. From September to March, the Forensics course focuses on public speaking and dramatic events that can be performed at competitive tournaments throughout New York State.
The students are not required to attend the approximately five tournaments (that we attend) in the Potsdam and Albany districts, but most students who elect this course are interested in challenging their forensics skills competitively.
If the students win two half bid (place twice) at tournaments, they are selected to attend the NYS Forensic Championship Finals in Albany. Students prepare for the following public speaking and dramatic categories: Dramatic/Humorous Interpretation, Oral Interpretation, Duo Dramatics, Extemporaneous Speaking, Original Oratory and Public Forum Debate.
From March until June, the students work on non-competitive public speaking and dramatic skills. Students learn the art of panel discussion, parliamentary procedure, policy debate, persuasive speeches, the interview, play direction, readers theatre, theatre of the absurd and improvisational theatre.
