Enhancement Opportunities

Every year brings the chance for our students at KCS to become exposed to cultural music enhancement. Most recently, we were awarded a grant from the World Drumming Initiative. This grant has provided the school with several floor congas, shakers and cowbells. As a part of this Initiative, the students attended a Taiko drumming performance, and participated in three drumming workshops (grades 3-6).

Performers from all over the world have been to our school and community in the past several years. Meadowmount, a private music school in nearby Lewis, is world renowned for its string instruction. They performed for us in March 2007. In 2006 a traveling Ugandan drum troupe visited Keene Valley. Our students participated by joining in the dancing and drumming. In October of 2005, we had Sol y Canto, a Latin-American group, perform multi-lingual songs for the entire school. Our elementary school students even learned some of their songs and performed with them!

In addition to visiting artists, each year the elementary school students attend a Syracuse Symphony performance. In addition, through Arts In Education programming and grants, they are able to attend music performances at least twice a year at the Lake Placid Center for the Arts.
