Elementary Counselor K-6
As an Elementary School Counselor at Keene Central School, I deliver regular classroom instruction to every K-6 child’s classroom once every 6 day cycle. I work closely with teachers and parents to address the needs of individuals and classrooms. Special classroom programming can occur at any time during the school year to meet the needs of the students.
Individual and Group Counseling
Students who need further instruction or have other issues, may participate in individual or group counseling sessions with either the Elementary or High School Counselor. Some of the more common issues are:
- Building self-esteem
- Improving peer relations
- Improving communication skills
- Developing self-control
- Becoming a better student
- Coping with change
- Dealing with stress
- Overcoming fears
- Anger management
Core Program:
This social and emotional learning program uses hands-on activity-based lessons to teach students how to identify feelings, solve problems, and get along with others. In addition to these skills, students also spend some time on:
Career Development
Students are made knowledgeable about the world of work. They relate personal skills, aptitudes, and abilities to future career decisions. Students will understand the value of the world of work and learn about helpers in the community. All students will begin to create a career plan that provides focus and direction to students’ educational experiences. They will answer the questions:
- Who am I?
- Where am I going?
- How do I get there?

Community Involvement:
Students learn to appreciate home, school, and community and become positive contributing members to their environment. Throughout the school year, students have opportunities to provide service to others:Visits to the Keene Valley Neighborhood House (community centered home for older adults)
Mentoring peers:
Making decorations for rooms at Vermont Children’s Hospital, arranged by
Safe School Ambassadors Program: Grades 4-6 (selected students)
This program is a student-centered model that trains diverse student leaders to intervene with their friends when they see teasing, exclusion, bullying and other forms of mistreatment. We have participated in this program since March 2006 with a practical focus on our school environment.
