School Sponsored Travel Opportunities
Keene Central School District believes that travel and experiences beyond the classroom are critical to a well-rounded education. We encourage and support a wide variety of learning opportunities for students of all ages.
Field trips
Classes travel to local museums, theatres, cultural centers as well as to outdoor education areas for hiking, environmental study and observation. Among these field trip destinations are:
One very popular annual trip is the interdisciplinary three day, two night trip to Upper Ausable Lake. During this trip, students learn how to row a guide boat, water safety, appreciation of the environment, orienteering, hiking safety, local history, ecology and fire building.
Academic Advancement
Groups of KCS students travel to visit colleges in our area. Among the schools visited on a rotating basis are: SUNY (Plattsburgh, Potsdam, Albany), Union College, Skidmore, Paul Smith’s College, University of Vermont, St. Michael’s College, Clarkson University and Clinton Community College.
Foreign Travel
Students (Grades 9-11) have the opportunity to raise the funds needed and to travel together to Europe during their summer vacation every other year. Destinations include Spain, Italy and Greece.
Domestic Travel
Students (Grades 9-12) have the opportunity to raise the funds needed and travel as a group during their spring vacations every other year. Destinations include the National Parks in Utah/Arizona, Pennsylvania (Gettysburg, Philadelphia) and Washington D.C.
Sixth Grade Trip
Every year, the sixth grade class travels to Boston, MA for an extended educational field trip.
Senior Trips
The Senior Class, with the approval of the Board of Education, has traditionally chosen and traveled to a variety of different locations during their spring vacation. Beginning in 2010, seniors will choose from three itineraries for their trip: Three Canadian Cities Tour (Quebec City, Montreal, Ottawa), New York City, or Washington D.C.
Keene Central School recognizes the education value of other travel opportunities arranged by individual families. Customized Education Plans may be arranged to allow students to retain their academic standing while pursing such opportunities.
